The Benefits of Morning Sunlight
A few years ago, I took an online class where one of the instructors discussed the benefits of early morning sunlight for brain health. This was particularly relevant to me because I had recently suffered from a severe concussion which had left me unable to focus, read, watch TV, or work for almost three weeks. I also had a headache that lasted for 47 days, which was incredibly frustrating. I joined this online class to learn how to heal my brain.
Although there were several amazing presenters and numerous useful tips, I found it difficult to concentrate on some of them. However, there was one thing that caught my attention and I still follow it to this day. It's an incredibly simple practice that anyone can do, and it only takes two minutes of your day. Let's just say it's a "no-brainer".
Here are the benefits of this 2-minute activity:
It improves sleep, improves mood, boosts brain power, can enhance your immune function, improves metabolism, and can improve your overall well-being.
The solution is as simple as exposing your eyes to natural morning light within the first two hours of waking up. No sunglasses, sunscreen, or shoes are required.
Your body's internal circadian clock is responsible for regulating your sleep-wake cycle and other physiological processes. This master clock is essential for good health and optimal functioning. By exposing yourself to morning sunlight, you can help synchronize your circadian rhythm and promote better sleep. Even if you work the late shift, getting sunlight exposure before going to bed can still be beneficial for regulating your sleep-wake cycle.
Numerous studies have shown that natural sunlight has a positive impact on our well-being. You should try spending some time outdoors for a week to see if you notice any difference in your daily routine. It's as simple as taking a walk to your mailbox, throwing out the trash, strolling around the block, or just sitting on your front porch. Spend at least two minutes in the morning sun, but five minutes or more is even better!
